FOBISIA GLORY FOR GOLFERS
On 14th Marh 2014, Shrewsbury's Golf Team, accompanied by Mr Meaney and Mrs Foster, travelled to Malaysia to compete in the FOBISIA Golf Tournament. The event, hosted by Garden International School at the superb Royal Salangor Course, ran over 2 days, with a vital pre-tournament practice round being played the day before. 10 schools from across the region were represented, including fellow Bangkok-based British international school, Harrow.
It was a real priviledge to be playing on one of the oldest courses in Asia, often referred to as the birthplace of golf in the region. Yet with severe drought currently affecting much of Malaysia, playing conditions were hard, dry and fast. This left the coaches with much to consider, but our talented golf team set about their business unphased. Shewsbury produced some strong first day performances, notably from Jan, Tanya and Gus, leaving us in a good position going into Sunday.
Nearby forest fires shrouded the course in dense smog throughout the second day but our team maintained focus. In the leading pairings, captain Jan was accompanied by talented new Year 8 student Tanya, and were grouped against the other leading girls from Harrow in an all-Thailand final. The girls played brilliantly, eventually beating the Harrow team by a comfortable 6 shots.
The individual competition was much tighter though, with Jan being forced into a play-off hole with Ice, also from Harrow school. Watched on by the whole field of 100 competitors, Ice took the initial advantage, Jan having hit her drive into a fairway bunker. But Ice failed to capitalise, catching the front edge with a tense wedge shot. To the cheers of the amazed onlookers, Jan recovered with one of the best bunker shots of the tournament, striking her approach to within 4ft of the pin, which she then converted by sinking the winning birdie putt.
Jan's composure in leading the team to victory in such a pressurised situation reaffirms what a superb talent she is, and what potential she has for a successful future in the sport. Well done to all of the team!

AJGA Junior Open at The Legends
Prapassarangkul recorded 14 pars on her final round card, three birdies, and only a single bogey

For the tournament, Prapassarangkul had only three bogeys on her way to her first win in her fourth AJGA event. Prapassarangkul felt confident about her putting all week, but was able to improve on her ball striking and iron play in the final round to rely on something other than her short game. “My putting was quite good, although I missed some birdie putts, I was still confident,” Prapassarangkul said. “My irons today were good though too.” On what it means to win her first AJGA event, Prapassarangkul showed her relief and joy to win when traveling across the world just to play in AJGA events. “I feel very honored to win here. It's really big for me because I come from Thailand so it's a really great feeling,” Prapassarangkul said. “I'm looking to study here in America, so this is really important for college golf as well.” Danielle Lee of La Mirada, Calif., took home second-place honors at 7-under-par 209, while Lydia Choi of Beverly Hills, Calif., Daniela Darquea of Quito, Ecuador, and Sarah Cho of San Diego, Calif., tied for third at 1-under-par 215.
About the AJGA
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,500 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.
